What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide (Brand name Ozempic) is an injectable medication when used in combination with diet and exercise, helps with blood sugar and weight loss. Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1 Agonist which help control blood sugar) slows down gastric empyting, in addition causes your pancreas to release insulin and blocks glucagon (hormone) that causes your liver to release sugar. 

 

Together, these functions can help you feel less hungry and curb appetite. The Food and Drug Administraction (FDA) approved the brand Wegovy. We do not prescribe Semaglutide under the brand names. We start patients with a compounded dose for the first month and slowly taper increase the dosages for the subsequent months. 

Side effects and Contraindications. The most common side effects of Semaglutide is nausea. But we take proactive measures through education to slim this effect. Additionally, we also administer vitamin B-6 which helps to curb any nausea. 

Absolute contraindications to Semaglutide DIet: 

Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer 

Type 1 Diabetes 

Pancreatitis 

Decreased kidney function
